A communication board/book uses pictures and symbols to give a child opportunities to learn core word vocabulary and later on, sentence structures, as well as increase opportunities for them to ask for something, make a comment, share their opinions and preferences, tell us what they need, make choices etc.  These are excellent resources for any child who does not yet successfully communicate with others or is having difficulty being understood by others.

We begin by focussing on core words. A small set of flexible words such as want, not and go, that make up roughly 80% of what we all use in many daily situations. Core words are selected for maximum use in many environments.
