EYFS Behavioural Approach: Regulation and Relationships
At Northwood Community Primary School we believe children are learning all the time, and as a community, we are dedicated to supporting all aspects of children’s learning and development. Our approach to children’s behaviour reflects this commitment to learning, our focus is on supporting children to develop the understanding and skills they need to develop self-regulation, learn, develop positive relationships and contribute to our school community.
We know our youngest children are constantly learning about themselves and others, they need support to regulate and positive relationships are an essential aspect of children’s learning. The principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage, particularly Positive Relationships and Enabling Environments, have informed our approach.
We have high expectations for children, which are firmly rooted in our knowledge of child development. This means that we base our expectations on our understanding of what children can do and the best ways for them to learn. We ensure when children are being taught in groups, the group size is appropriate and we recognise the different ways that children might position themselves to pay full attention - for example, sitting with legs out, standing close to the group or being positioned in a way that allows them to move a little. Our focus is on ensuring all children are included and enabled to engage rather than enforcing one way of showing attention.
We have a few simple rules, which are explained to children both in group activities and when talking to them during activities and play.
- We take care of each other and our classroom.
- We take turns when there are not enough toys for everyone to play.
- We make sure everyone can play and learn.
- We listen to each other.
- We work hard and try our best at all times
These rules link to our whole school core values of teamwork, kindness, happiness, honestly and respect and reflect our, ‘No Outsiders,’ ethos.
We have 6 Learning heroes based on characteristics that promote effective learning and development and children will be encouraged to understand each characteristic at a level appropriate to their development, reflect on when they have embodied this characteristic and to recognise it in others.
Our learning heroes are:
- Respectful Rafa
- Responsible Ron
- Responsive Rhea
- Resourceful Ray
- Resilient Rob
- Reflective Rita
